Member Spotlight Pat Ward

I’m a local who grew up in Aldeburgh and have written books on my memories. I’ve also written a childrens book, with illustrations by Theronda Hoffman. I am currently writing new material.

I produce a yearly calendar named Treasures and Pleasures of Aldeburgh through the year. I’m on my 7th calendar at present, and the profits go to the Aldeburgh carnival fund. Photo showing myself dressed in an old carnival outfit selling the calendars. I also have a variety show, named The Pearlies, and perform in care homes etc in the local community, with a male singer and we do this voluntarily. You can contact me on pat.a.ward@hotmail.co.uk

Susan Brinkhurst invites us to participate in a themed outdoor exhibition over the Festival weekend as part of

The First Light Festival - celebrating the Summer Solstice, takes place in Lowestoft. Every year we invite artists to take part in a themed outdoor exhibition over the Festival weekend.

This year we would like to extend our invitation to The Arts Club Aldeburgh Beach artists.

The festival theme is ‘Weather Vanes & Cardinal Points’ which we hope is a broad enough brief to spark a great variety of ideas and new works from all the artists invited to take part.

Thousands of visitors pass through the Gardens over the two days of the festival so your work will be widely seen and discussed.

Keep in mind that the work will be shown outdoors and needs to survive the weather (we have had the odd drop of rain in the past) and consider carefully how the piece will be positioned and fixed for display. The work can be mounted on wooden stakes or metal poles in the ground or hung from the trees (but not fixed to them with nails or screws). Works laying flat on the ground might pose a trip hazard so let us know if that’s what you’re planning and we can discuss the problem and a solution.

Delivery of artwork to the Gardens will be on the 18th June for the Festival weekend (22nd-23rd).

Your artwork remains your property and no commission is taken from any sales that result from the ‘Weather Vanes & Cardinal Points’ exhibition.

As with last year we are happy to offer £75 to each artist towards the cost of materials.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you’d like to take part so we can prepare the contributor’s list.

Anne Desmet RA invites us to

I’ve been working towards this exhibition for about a year now. It will be the first ever solo exhibition at this venue by a woman artist and it will span over three decades of my documentation of London in wood engravings and mixed-media printed collages. It will feature 150 works including 41 brand new London-themed kaleidoscopic prints alongside some of my engraved woodblocks and tools. The works aim to suggest time and change, depicting the evolution of urban landscapes - from Ancient Rome to London.

The Guildhall Art Gallery (next door to London's historic Guildhall) has an unrivalled permanent collection of London-themed works to which it has just added a large razor-shell collage of mine: Fires of London. It also houses the archaeological remains of London’s Ancient Roman amphitheatre which lie, available to visit, directly beneath the gallery’s floors. In this context, it is the perfect place for me to show my work.

Anne Desmet: Kaleidoscope/London will run at the Guildhall Art Gallery from 12th April until 8th September and, during its run, I’ll be conducting several ‘artist-tours’ and running a wood engraving workshop. Full details to follow soon.
