Gormleys metamorphose into The Angel of the East

Loss of Gormleys on Aldeburgh Beach Inspires Creation of New Work of Art: The Angel of The East

Early this morning on this sunny Suffolk day, just before my swim, I took this 9-second video of the Gormleys on Aldeburgh beach. Quartet (Sleeping) is a beautiful transformation of Antony Gormley's original work of art (of four standing bollards) into a meditative installation on the beach contemplating the interaction between absence and permanence and the timelessness of the tide. There are just five days left to experience Quartet (Sleeping) before it metamorphoses into our own Angel of the East.

Here on Aldeburgh Beach, we face due east and are guided by the rising sun, from early morning swims to creating new works of art.

In response to our loss of the Gormleys, members of the Arts Club Aldeburgh Beach are creating the Angel of the East. From Monday 29th March, members (in groups of 6) will lay red sea bricks in a perfect circle in celebration of the rising sun. This life-enhancing new work of art continues our Duchampian transformation of Gormley's original.

You are all invited to participate in the creation of Angel of the East by placing a red stone in this perfect circle. Here is the first stone to be laid; a beautiful red sea brick, moulded by the sea over time. It will be placed by the artist Caroline Gay Way on Monday.

Lookout Restoration Progress

Our reluctant sale of the Gormleys has raised sufficient funds to restore the Aldeburgh Beach Lookout. This iconic tower, which stands on the beach, is in desperate need of a coat of paint! Ten test pots down, and many swatches later, we have chosen Autentico's breathable Indian Sand, a beautiful ochre that catches the light and reminds us all of a Venetian tower.

I can't wait to welcome you all here to experience the Angel of the East and join in our challenging art projects over the next few months in and around the restored Lookout.
