DUCHAMP ONE HUNDRED YEARS LATER

In 1917 Duchamp presented his urinal (Fountain) signed R Mutt, 1917, for exhibition at the Society of Independent Artists in New York; but it was rejected by the selection committee. His act of iconoclasm shocked the art world, it changed the course of the history of art and the urinal was voted the most influential work of art of all time by 500 art world experts in 2004. 

For Duchamp the opinion of the ‘posthumous spectator’ was most important.  “Posterity is now, 100 years later”  says Caroline Wiseman who masterminds this exciting year, when the challenge is to assimilate the progress of the last century and move art on forwards in ways which have the power to bond and unite humanity.  Postmodernism becomes People's Postmodernism.
