THE ANGEL OF THE EAST

Created and named by members of the Arts Club Aldeburgh Beach, this circle of beautiful red, sea-washed bricks is a participatory work of art. It lies facing due east on Aldeburgh Beach, between the Lookout and the sea, in celebration of the rising sun.

The Angel of the East lies on the 52nd latitude facing the International Peace Palace at The Haig.

We invite the public to choose a pebble from the beach, think about what it means to be ‘alive in the universe’, and write a few thoughtful words on their peace pebble before placing it on the peace line.

They can then take a photo of their pebble and tag @aldeburghbeachlookout on Instagram.

The Angel of the East is the focus through which we celebrate the rising sun this summer solstice.

She lies facing east between the Aldeburgh Beach Lookout and the sea, in the same place where the sculptures by Sir Antony Gormley once lay.

Their removal in March inspired members of the Arts Club Aldeburgh Beach to create and name The Angel of the East. This new work of art takes the shape of a circle created from beautiful red sea-washed bricks; sculpted by time and tide, they embody the elements of earth, fire and water, as we live our lives governed by the sun.
