David Baldry: Game Over

Game Over is what I imagine will be on the screen at the moment of death. ‘Ride of Life’ eludes to the fantastic journey through the highways and byways of our time spent on this planet. The twists and turns, the ups and downs that we encounter as humans. Unavoidably we move forward in time into an unknown and unfolding, rollercoaster landscape. We ride thinking we are in control but are we and do we want to be? The meter is running down little by little. Have we remembered the past as it was or as it might be? As Hunter S. Thompson says, “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”

David Campbell Baldry was Froebel educated as a child. He later studied Sculpture at Brighton Polytechnic and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Apart from a year in Rome, he has spent most of his career working education firstly at Harrow School but mostly as Head of Fine Art at the University of Suffolk. He has worked as an advisor for Arts Council and other government bodies both in the UK and the Czech Republic. Throughout this time he has maintained a broad-based practice as an artist with an interest in Drawing, Sculpture, Video, and Architecture. He has developed and curated a number of ambitious exhibitions including ‘SNIP’, ‘SNIP.it', ‘It Is What It Isn’t’, ‘Landscape and Light' and currently ‘Alive in the Universe’. His work is in a number of collections.
