Thomas Hardy with his ‘passionate friend’ Florence, who later became his second wife, photographed on Aldeburgh Beach on 16th August 1909.

One of Britain’s most celebrated authors, Thomas Hardy visited Aldeburgh often. He was the guest of the atheist and Darwin supporter, Edward Clodd, who lived at Strafford House, next door but one from the Art House. Hardy and other progressive thinkers were invited to Clodd’s literary salons.

Derek Wyatt guides us through the genius of Thomas Hardy and why his novel Jude the Obscure has had such an impact on his own life.

MEMBER’S NEWS

ROGER HARDY’S EXHIBITION ‘TURNING TIDE’ OPENED SUNDAY 1st AUGUST AT THE DOVECOT

Emanating from nature, Hardy’s gnarled, ethereal figures, exquisitely carved from sea-worn-wood, not only alert us to this decaying wastefully discarded material but also hold an echo of our own human fragility. This feeling of belonging, identity and place became very relevant to the artists durning the last year of lockdown.

A connection is made during this exhibition with a sentinel standing at the Dovecote Gallery window, looking towards a figure gazing out to sea at the top the South Lookout tower in Aldeburgh A direct connection to the origins of the sculptures in ‘Turning Tide’.
