MONTHLY ARTS CLUB LUNCH
Monthly Arts Club Lunch, Wednesday 2nd August 1pm @ the Lookout
This month, the Arts Club lunch will be held as usual in the Lookout. Please bring food and drink to share!
ARTS CLUB OPEN
We are excited that the first ever Arts Club Aldeburgh Beach Open opens Thursday 17th August until Monday 28th August. This spans the Aldeburgh Carnival and bank holiday weekend so is a great time to show art in Aldeburgh.
This new exhibition will be on all three floors of the Lookout and is free of charge to all paid-up members of the Arts Club Aldeburgh Beach.
Each member can hang one picture of their own choice, medium size. Or if a writer or poet, can present a piece of poetry or writing.
The works can be for sale and the Lookout takes 50% commission which reduces to 20% if you take a turn manning the show. If you’d like to exhibit contact me as soon as possible.

ART AND POETRY
As you are aware, we are beginning to introduce a cross-fertilisation of the arts into our Club and Lynne Nesbit, who joined our Aldeburgh Arts Club more as an appreciative lover of art than a practitioner, has been sharing her poetry and singing voice with us. Lynne is a trustee of Suffolk Poetry Society, of which I am a Patron. We would like to foster a relationship of mutual inspiration between Suffolk Poetry Society members and Aldeburgh Arts Club members. Lynne would love your ideas of how that could come about. Carol Lawrence (also a member of Suffolk Poetry Society) is experimenting already, having invited Lynne to contribute her poems and singing to her group's (The Aldeburgh Artists Collective) exhibition Hope In The Liminal. This took take place in July at the Lookout when Lynne joined the artists and performed some of her poems.
ARTS CLUB CRIT GROUP
MEMBERS’ SPOTLIGHT: SUSAN DEBNAM
Susan’s drive towards creativity began as a child playing with dangerous tools in her great grandfather’s shed. As a shipwright and builder of Thames barges he delighted in her curiosity and encouraged learning, risk and patience.
In later years Susan’s interest and participation in the arts - as a painter, a pianist, a writer, a photographer - played a significant but supportive role to her career in organisational change consultancy. Then in 2020 the world shifted and she decided to explore the limitations and opportunities that began to emerge. Working with tutors and mentors globally she painted, discovered, pushed her practice. In 2021 she built a studio and the work became expansive. As the world opened up she travelled to see original art, she read, discussed, gained gallery representation and drew on her psychology background to go beyond technique and examine the mindset that supports the fertile artist.
Susan’s practice continues to develop. She has recently been working with a member of the New English Art Club to push her into new concepts and ways of mark making. Her references include De Stael, Diebenkorn, Morandi and Nicholson. She works primarily in acrylic and oil and her focus currently is on painting misshapen pots and empty landscape.
