Patrick Caulfield RA.

Born in London in 1936, Patrick Caulfield studied at Chelsea School of Art, 1956-9, and Royal College of Art, 1960-3. In the latter years he taught at Chelsea School of Art. By then Caulfield had shown several times with Young Contemporaries and in 1964 was in The New Generation at Whitechapel Art gallery. Caulfield’s first one-man show was at the Robert Fraser Gallery in 1965, and he soon made an impression in mixed and solo international shows. A print retrospective toured California in 1977; in 1981 there was a retrospective at Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and Tate Gallery (now Tate Britain); then Serpentine Gallery in 1992-3.

The artist’s early mature works were black-and-white, depicting familiar objects, and he was seen as one of the later generation of Pop painters. When he worked in colour this was black-outlined and without modulation, although later works depended more on the painterly illusion, such as in the 1984 acrylic on canvas Fish and Sandwich, in the Saatchi collection. The Arts Council and many other collections hold his work. Elected RA, 1993. He died in 2005.
