Chicago born, Joan Edlis fulfilled a life long dream when she moved to London and became a British subject. She is preoccupied with the connection between the immateriality of sound and the materiality of the world. Her explorations include drawing, printmaking, objects, installations, video and sound.

Completing her MA at City & Guilds London Art School in 2007, Edlis has been awarded residencies in Ireland, Budapest, Istanbul and most recently at the Aldeburgh Beach Lookout. Each location triggers a body of work arising directly from observing and experiencing the environment from being somewhere else.
“I like the idea of landscape. Some of my work is simple, to the point of minimalism and some is very complicated, using lots of different bits of stuff. The two opposites work because the simple stuff comes out of the complicated stuff and sometimes the complicated stuff turns into two or three simple works. As I make things instinctively, they chan e and this gives them their own history, which makes them interesting. This is how they relate to landscape. Landscape, as opposed to nature, has been described as having a history”
